Rhodes in April is mild rather than hot, and that is the whole point. Daytime highs average around 20°C (68°F) and nights about 14°C (57°F), which suits sightseeing, climbing to the acropolis at Lindos and walking the Old Town far better than lying on a beach all day. If you want guaranteed heat and warm sea, book June instead; if you want space, lower prices and comfortable walking weather, April delivers.

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service puts Rhodes at an average daily maximum of 20°C (68°F) and an average nightly minimum of 14.2°C (57.6°F) in April, based on 1991-2020 normals. Rain is a real feature of the month: the WWIS climate page for Rhodes lists roughly 7.6 rain days and around 28 mm for April, though it does not state the averaging period, so treat those as a guide to frequency rather than a promise.

What that feels like matters more than the numbers. In direct sun, out of the wind, a 20°C afternoon reads as genuinely warm and you will see people in short sleeves on the sheltered lanes of Rhodes Old Town; in shade or when the wind comes off the sea, you will want a layer. Evenings cool off quickly after sunset, so late dinners outdoors are pleasant rather than balmy.

The month is a step up from March and a clear step below May, when the average daily maximum rises to 23.8°C (74.8°F) and the average minimum to 17.8°C (64°F), with fewer rain days. If you are weighing Rhodes against other Mediterranean options, our comparison of the warmest places in Europe in April shows where the island sits.

Rain usually arrives as a passing shower or a short unsettled spell rather than an all-day soak, and the island dries fast. The practical response is to keep one indoor or sheltered option in reserve for each day and to treat the forecast as something you look at on arrival, not months ahead. For a fuller view of the island's seasons, see the best time to visit Rhodes.

Is it warm enough?

For sightseeing and walking, yes. April is close to ideal for the Old Town's Street of the Knights and the Palace of the Grand Master, where you are on your feet for hours and shade is patchy. It is also far kinder than July for the climb through Lindos village to the acropolis, a steep set of steps that becomes punishing in summer heat.

Families with young children tend to do well in April because nothing is crowded and nobody overheats, but they should plan around shorter outdoor days and cooler evenings. Couples and walkers get the best of the month: hill villages, inland paths and the shaded trails around Epta Piges, the Seven Springs, where the plane trees and water channels make a warm afternoon comfortable.

Who should wait? Anyone whose idea of a Greek island holiday is swimming, sunbathing and long beach lunches. The sea lags well behind the air in April and feels cold to most swimmers, and beach clubs and waterfront restaurants along the resort strips are only partially up and running. If that is your trip, May is a better fit and June is safer still.

Early vs late April

Treat the month as two halves. Early April is the opener: the first charter flights are arriving, some hotels and tavernas in Faliraki, Pefkos and Kolymbia are still painting and restocking, and a cool, wet spell is more likely. Late April brings warmer afternoons, a fuller choice of places to eat and a better chance that boat trips and seasonal attractions are running.

The other variable is Greek Orthodox Easter, which moves each year and can fall in April or May. It is a genuinely atmospheric time to be on the island, but it also fills ferries, family tavernas and inter-island transport, so book accommodation and any car hire early if your dates overlap. Confirm the exact date for your year before you commit.

Comparing April with May is the most useful decision you can make. May adds roughly four degrees to the daytime average and cuts the rain days substantially, which is the difference between a walking holiday and a mixed one. If you have flexibility and want both comfort and space, the second half of May is the sweet spot; our guide to Rhodes in May sets out the detail.

What is open

The core sights operate in April. Rhodes Old Town, the Palace of the Grand Master, the Archaeological Museum and Lindos are the backbone of an April trip, and the absence of queues changes the experience more than you might expect. Check the current opening hours and ticket arrangements on the official site of each monument before you build a day around it, since pre-season schedules differ from high summer.

Further out, Kallithea Springs and inland villages such as those around the lower slopes of Mount Attaviros are quieter and more rewarding in spring, when the countryside is green and the spring flowers are out. Walking paths and viewpoints are at their best now, before the summer sun burns the hillsides.

The coastline is the weak point. In resorts such as Faliraki and Pefkos, many beach bars, watersports operators and seasonal restaurants open gradually through the month, so do not assume the strip outside your hotel is fully alive in early April. Evening meals are more reliably found in Rhodes Town and the larger villages than on the beachfront.

Things to do in April

Sponsored

Start with Rhodes Old Town, one of the best-preserved medieval walled cities in the Mediterranean. The Street of the Knights, the moat walk and the jumble of lanes behind the harbour reward slow wandering, and April temperatures mean you can keep going all afternoon. The Palace of the Grand Master is the obvious indoor anchor if a shower rolls in.

Give Lindos a full day. The climb to the acropolis is the high point, with the village's whitewashed lanes and St Paul's Bay below, and April is the month that makes the steps manageable. Pair it with an early start, then spend the afternoon on the quieter side of the peninsula.

Inland, head for Epta Piges for shaded paths, tunnels and water channels that feel cool even on a warm day, and for hill villages where the spring flowers and blossom are at their peak. Local flora includes orchids, the Rhodes peony and dragon arum, which appear in the countryside from April. This is walking country rather than beach country.

Beaches and the sea in April

Sitting on a beach in April can be lovely in the middle of the day, with the sun on your back and plenty of space. The water is another matter: it is still cold enough that a quick dip is a bracing choice rather than a comfortable swim for most people. If swimming is central to your holiday, plan for May at the earliest and expect June to be the real step change.

Sheltered coves on the east coast, including the bays around Lindos and the calmer stretches near Kolymbia, work best in April because they cut the wind and catch the afternoon sun. The meltemi has not yet established itself, so the sea is often calmer than in high summer, which makes boat trips and cove-hopping more appealing than swimming.

Crowds and prices

April is quiet by Rhodes standards. The island's visitor numbers build through the spring and peak in July and August, and April sits well below that, which shows in the ease of parking, the lack of queues at Lindos and the availability of tables in the Old Town. Prices for accommodation and car hire are lower than in high season.

Two things push demand up. Greek Orthodox Easter brings Greek visitors and family reunions, and the UK school holidays and early May bank holidays pull British families towards the last week of April and the first of May. If your dates overlap either, book accommodation and car hire several weeks ahead, especially for Lindos and the Old Town.

April or May?

Sponsored

Choose April if you want walking, ruins, spring flowers, space and lower prices, and you are content with daytime temperatures around 20°C (68°F) and cool evenings. Choose May if you want swimming, sunbathing and a fully open resort scene, because the averages climb to about 23.8°C (74.8°F) by day and the rain becomes occasional.

If your priority is heat, June delivers: an average daily maximum of 27.8°C (82°F) and an average minimum of 21.8°C (71.2°F), with rain almost absent. Our guide to Rhodes in June covers what that means for beach days and early-summer crowds. Very few travellers regret April for sightseeing, but plenty regret it if they booked expecting summer.

The verdict

Book April for Rhodes Old Town, Lindos, inland walks and the spring countryside, and accept that the sea is cold and the resort strips are half awake. It is the best month of the spring for walking and ruins, and the quietest for the headline sights. Book May or June if the trip is really about swimming, beaches and long, warm evenings.

Before you book, check the official Greek government travel page for entry requirements and the official site of each monument for opening times, and treat the weather as typical spring conditions rather than a promise. Then choose your dates around Easter and the school holidays rather than the other way round.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Rhodes hot enough in April?

No, not hot. Average daytime highs sit around 20°C (68°F) with nights near 14°C (57°F), which is comfortable for walking and sightseeing but not for all-day sunbathing. If you want heat, May and June are the better months.

What is the weather like in Rhodes in April?

Expect mild, changeable spring weather: sunny afternoons in the low twenties, cooler evenings, and passing showers rather than settled rain. Wind off the sea can make the shade feel noticeably cooler than the temperature suggests.

Is it warm enough to swim in Rhodes in April?

For most people, no. The sea warms slowly and lags well behind the air temperature, so a quick dip is bracing rather than comfortable. Swimmers generally do better from May onwards.

Is Rhodes busy in April?

April is quiet compared with July and August, with short queues at Lindos and space in the Old Town. Demand rises around Greek Orthodox Easter and the UK school holidays, so book accommodation and car hire early if your dates overlap.

Is April a good time to visit Rhodes?

It is excellent for the Old Town, Lindos, inland walks and spring flowers, and the mild temperatures make the acropolis steps far easier than in summer. It is a poor choice if swimming and beach time are the main point of your trip.

Should I go to Rhodes in April or May?

Pick April for space, lower prices and comfortable walking, and May if you want warmer days, far less rain and a resort scene that is properly open. Late May is the best compromise for most travellers who want both.
