Kos in April: Is It Warm Enough? What to Expect

Kos in April: Is It Warm Enough? What to Expect

The quick version

Kos in April typically reaches 19°C by day and 13°C at night. Good for ruins, cycling and village walks, but the sea and evenings stay cool.

Kos in April is mild rather than hot: the island's long-term climate normals put the average daytime high at 19.2°C (about 66°F) and the average night-time low at 12.9°C (about 55°F). That is comfortable weather for walking round ruins, cycling the flat coastal roads and eating lunch outdoors, but it is not beach-holiday warmth, and the sea is still cold.

The month suits sightseers, cyclists and walkers who would rather have empty paths than a sun lounger. It does not suit anyone whose main aim is lying on a beach or swimming, or sitting outside in short sleeves after dark. If you want proper heat, look further south and later, or start with where it is warm in Europe in April.

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service normals for Kos airport, covering 1991 to 2020, give mean daily maxima of 19.2°C (66°F) and minima of 12.9°C (55°F) for April. The service does not publish monthly rain totals or sunshine sums for the island, so treat April as a mixed spring month: bright spells with cloud and the occasional wet day rather than guaranteed wall-to-wall sun.

The northern Aegean in spring can be breezy, and Kos is no exception, so a sheltered terrace on the south side of the island feels noticeably warmer than an exposed north-coast beach. The sea stays cold through April because it warms far more slowly than the land; the main holiday season is generally described as running from May to October, which tells you where April sits.

Is it warm enough?

For wandering the Asklepion terraces, the ancient agora and the Ottoman bazaar in Kos Town, yes. The archaeological zone sits inland above town and is exposed, so a 19°C afternoon is pleasant for an hour of looking and climbing its broad stairways. The Asklepion is easy to reach by bicycle from town, which gives you a gentle, low-cost way to cover it.

Cycling works well in April because Kos is relatively compact and the roads around Kos Town and the flatter parts of the island are easy, and the heat that makes midday cycling unpleasant in summer has not arrived. Evenings are the catch: 13°C after dark is jacket weather, not dinner-on-the-water weather. If you want to eat outside comfortably at night, plan for May.

Early vs late April

Expect the first half of April to feel like an extension of March: cooler afternoons, more cloud, and a higher chance of a wet or windy day interrupting your plans. That is the price of near-empty sights and easy cycling on the coast roads. By the last week or so, afternoons become more reliably mild, and the difference between an early and a late visit is noticeable.

If your dates are flexible and you want warmth without summer heat, the second half of the month is the better bet. Keep a wet-weather plan for one day, such as Kos Town's covered market and the archaeological museum up on Platía Eleftherías, which gives you somewhere to shelter without losing the day.

April or May?

May changes the equation. The same normals put May's average high at 23.8°C (about 75°F) and its average low at 16.6°C (62°F), which is warm enough to eat outside and treat the island as a beach destination. Our guide to Kos in May sets out what that extra warmth buys.

April wins for solitude and cooler walking; May wins for warmth and open air. For a trip that hinges on leisurely beach days and warm evenings, our guide to the best time to visit Kos sets out which months suit which kind of trip. If your heart is set on long, hot days, June is where the thermometer climbs much further.

If you compare Kos with the rest of Greece, remember April weather here is coastal Aegean, not Cretan or Ionian. Our guide to Greece in April places it alongside warmer and cooler options so you can pick your island according to your appetite for mildness.

What is open

Kos Town's sights mostly function year-round, and spring is when they are open without queues. The Castle of the Knights of Saint John, the Roman odeion with its small museum, and the archaeological museum on Platía Eleftherías are the core of a day in town, though the outdoor cinema opens from May, so it is one pleasure April does not deliver.

Restaurants in Kos Town and the villages are open, but some seasonal places hold back: the courtyard restaurant Ambavris serves suppers from May, and the ouzerí Pote tin Kyriaki closes on some weekdays in low season. Plan your evenings around the year-round tavernas near Vássilos Georgíou and the harbour, and ask your first choices directly if you have your heart set on a particular table.

Things to do

Kos Town itself is the best April day: the ancient agora, the Castle of the Knights, the Tree of Hippocrates and the Ottoman quarter together take half a day, and the Italian-built market gives you somewhere to browse honey and herbs. It is pleasant in mild weather, and its low-density, garden-town layout makes walking it easy, which is rare for a Greek island capital.

Inland, the fortified village of Paleó Pylí has a castle and medieval churches with vivid frescoes, and the modern village of Pylí below it has a great rural taverna, Palea Pigi, in its Pigí district. The mountain villages of the Asfendió region – Ziá, Lagoúdi and the half-deserted whitewashed hamlets around Mount Díkeos – are another April favourite, quiet before the coaches start their sunset circuits.

The walk up to Khristós peak above Ziá, with its little chapel and 360-degree views over the islands and the Turkish coast, is done in about three hours return, and is best in spring when it is cool enough to be pleasant and clear enough for the view. This is why April matters for walkers: the same climb in July is a slog. At the end of the day, the seaside hot springs at Bros Thermá on the east coast are a fine stop before dinner.

Wildlife watchers once came to the Alykí salt marsh behind Tigáki for flamingos and other migratory birds, though a local guide reports the birds have not appeared for several years. Even without them, the flat coastal cycle from town to Tigáki and Marmári is one of the best low-effort April routes on the island.

Food in season

Spring produce is where April earns its keep. Local melons from Kos are long-famous across the region; wild greens, greens pies, fresh cheese and spring lamb turn up on the taverna menu at this time of year. Breakfast in a village café with Greek coffee, bread and local honey beats most hotel buffets.

Ambavris, just south of the Casa Romana, serves a menu of mezédes in the courtyard of an old house, and its kitchen runs from May. Until then, the village tavernas of Platáni make a good lunch stop after the Asklepion. Look for fresh fennel pie and shellfish at the long-running ouzerí Pote tin Kyriaki in the old town when it is open, and a bottle of Hatziemmanouil wine with supper.

Asking what is in season is the most reliable way to order in April, when menus are in transition and not everything on a summer menu exists. The island's farming tradition runs right up to the beach side of the coast roads, and a roadside stall nearer the village is a good place to buy produce and ask about what is local this week.

Crowds and prices

April is quiet, and quiet means value in the broad sense: rooms and car hire are not under pressure from high-season demand, ferry and boat operators are gearing up rather than running at full capacity, and restaurant tables are easy to get. If your dates fall on Easter or Greek Orthodox Easter, expect a burst of domestic visitors and higher prices around that weekend.

If you are thinking about May bank holidays and half term, our guide to Kos in June is a further step further up the scale in cost and heat. If you are looking for the quietest month still worth travelling to, April beats May, and May beats June.

Honest drawbacks

The main drawback is temperature. Evenings near 13°C are cool enough to send you indoors, and the sea is cold until well into May. Exposure on the north coast adds wind that makes a 20°C afternoon feel like 16°C, so plan walks and boat trips for the more sheltered south and east.

The season has not fully opened: some tavernas, boat operators and seasonal shops run reduced or erratic hours, and outdoor cinema season has not started. None of that is a disaster – it is the trade for smaller crowds and lower stress. Just do not expect a full summer set of options in every resort.

If your dates are firmly set in April and you want more heat, consider options with a stronger spring warm-up: our guide to Crete in April and our guide to Corfu in April compare what those islands deliver at the same time of year. For a broader comparison of the whole Mediterranean and the Canary Islands, the best time to visit Kos guide is a useful next stop.

The verdict

Sponsored

Kos in April is a good month for a certain kind of trip – the ruins, the villages, the mountain path above Ziá, the tavernas of Kos Town – and a poor one for a lazy beach holiday. Come for the walking, the cycling, the sights and the food; leave the swimming for May. If you want the same island with heat in the air and the sea warm, our guide to Kos in May is where to look next.

Plan Your Visit

If you want shoulder-season conditions, plan your days around walking early on the coast road to Tigáki and sightseeing at the Asklepion and Kos Town in the warmer afternoons. Book accommodation and a car early for the Easter period, but otherwise April is an easy month to organise at short notice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How hot is Kos in April?

Typical daytime highs are around 19.2°C (66°F) and nights average 12.9°C (55°F), according to long-term national weather service normals for Kos airport. That is mild rather than hot, and noticeably cooler in the evening.

Is Kos warm enough to sunbathe in April?

It can be pleasant in the middle of the day, but it is not reliable sunbathing weather: expect bright spells mixed with cloud and some wind, and a cool sea. If sunbathing is the main aim, May onwards is a safer bet.

Can you swim in Kos in April?

The sea stays cold through April because it warms more slowly than the land, so swimming is braver than comfortable for most people. The main holiday season is generally described as running from May to October, which is a better guide to when the sea warms up.

Is April a good time to visit Kos?

Yes, if you want walking, cycling, ruins and village days with low crowds. It is not a beach month. For warm evenings, lazy swimming days and a livelier restaurant scene, choose May or June instead.

What is there to do in Kos in April?

Kos Town's ancient agora, the Castle of the Knights and the Asklepion make a strong day out, and the mountain villages of Ziá, Lagoúdi and Paleó Pylí are quiet and pleasant. The climb to Khristós peak above Ziá takes about three hours return and is best done in spring.

Is Kos busy in April?

Kos is quiet through April, apart from the Easter weekend and Greek Orthodox Easter, when domestic visitors push prices up. If you want near-empty paths and easy tables, the second half of the month offers both warmth and quiet.

Does it rain in Kos in April?

April is a spring month with a mix of bright days and occasional wet or cloudy spells rather than a long dry stretch. National weather service data for the island does not give a usable monthly rain total, so plan for a mixed pattern and keep one indoor day in reserve.

Should I go to Kos in April or May?

Choose April for cooler walking and quiet sights; choose May for warm evening air and comfortable swimming. May's typical high is around 23.8°C (75°F) and its night-time low around 16.6°C (62°F), which makes it a full beach month rather than a shoulder one.
