Late May to mid June is the best time to visit Menorca. Days are warm and long, the six-month tourist season is under way, and the island has not yet hit its high-summer crowds; September is the strong second window. April works for walkers who accept cool evenings, while July and August trade comfort for heat and busy resorts.

Where Menorca Sits and Why It Matters

Menorca is the northernmost of the Balearic Islands, sitting in the western Mediterranean east of Mallorca and well north of Ibiza. That position gives it a mild, breezy climate with four distinct seasons rather than a uniform warm-weather blur, so the month you choose changes the trip substantially. The island is small enough to drive end to end in about an hour, which makes it easy to chase the sheltered side of the island on a windy day.

The island runs on two calendars. The tourist season runs from 1 May to 31 October, when resorts, restaurants, shops and activities operate at full stretch and flight and ferry schedules thicken; from November to the end of April most resort businesses close, though some hotels and shops stay open or reopen for Easter. That divide, rather than temperature alone, should drive your choice of month.

If you are weighing Menorca against the other Balearics or the Spanish mainland, the deciding factor is usually wind and space rather than warmth. Menorca is quieter and greener than its neighbours, and its spring feels cooler and breezier than sheltered corners of the mainland. The Short Answer: Late May to Mid June, Then September

Aim for the second half of May through mid June. By then the average daytime high has climbed past 21 °C (70 °F), sunshine hours are long, rain days have dropped sharply, and the season is open without the island being full. You get reliable outdoor weather for walking, cycling and old-town wandering, with evenings mild enough to sit outside.

September is the second window: the sea and land have stored summer warmth, the school holidays are over, and the island settles back into a calmer rhythm. The trade-off is a shorter daylight window than June and a season winding down rather than opening. For a full picture of the late-spring version of the island, our guide to Menorca in June covers what the longer days feel like.

Weather in April

April on Menorca is mild rather than warm. AEMET's normals for Menorca Airport, Mahón, period 1981–2010, give an average daily maximum of 18.0 °C (64 °F) and an average minimum of 10.6 °C (51 °F), with 222 hours of sunshine, 6.0 rain days and 45 mm of rain across the month. Expect bright, changeable days and genuinely cool evenings.

That profile suits walkers, cyclists and sightseers who want the Camí de Cavalls and the old towns of Mahón and Ciutadella without heat. It does not suit anyone hoping to laze outdoors all day, and families with small children will find the evenings and the wind demanding. If warmth is the priority, look further south or wait a month; our Menorca in April guide sets out the trade-offs in detail.

Weather in May

May is the month the island turns. AEMET gives an average daily maximum of 21.6 °C (71 °F) and a minimum of 13.9 °C (57 °F), with 270 hours of sunshine, 4.4 rain days and 37 mm of rain. Days are noticeably longer and drier than in April, and afternoons are comfortable for sitting outside rather than merely tolerable.

Early May still carries April's variability: a cool, windy spell is entirely possible, and the sea remains brisk. Late May is the sweet spot, when settled days dominate and the season is fully open but the island is not yet crowded. Walkers should still plan around the breeze, which is a genuine feature of Menorca rather than a footnote.

Weather in June

June is warm and very sunny. AEMET's normals give an average daily maximum of 25.8 °C (78 °F) and a minimum of 17.8 °C (64 °F), with 311 hours of sunshine, 2.0 rain days and 14 mm of rain. Rain becomes rare, evenings are pleasant, and the long days leave room for both a morning walk and an afternoon in town.

Early June still feels like spring's better half; late June edges towards high summer, with stronger afternoon heat and busier resorts as UK half term and early summer holidays arrive. It remains a good month for hiking and cycling if you start early, but the margin for a long midday walk narrows as the month progresses.

Early vs Late Month in Spring

Treat each spring month as two halves. Early April behaves like a cool, unsettled March, with the best walking conditions of the year but evenings that need a jacket; late April is drier and brighter but still cool after dark. Early May can still throw a windy, overcast spell, while late May is the most reliable spring window on the island.

In June the shift runs the other way: the first fortnight keeps spring's freshness, and the second fortnight starts to feel like summer, with hotter afternoons and fuller resorts. If you have flexibility, book the earlier half of June rather than the later one, and the later half of May rather than the earlier one.

Summer: Hot, Busy and at Its Peak

Sponsored

July and August are the island's high season, with the strongest heat, the fullest resorts and the highest prices of the year. Beaches and the headline sights in Mahón and Ciutadella are at their busiest, and the relaxed pace the island is known for gives way to a capital-B busy summer. It is the right month only if you want guaranteed heat and do not mind sharing it.

The upside is that everything is open, from boat trips to the full spread of restaurants, and the sea is at its warmest. The downside is that walking the Camí de Cavalls or cycling the interior becomes a early-morning or late-afternoon activity. For most travellers choosing a first trip, the shoulder months deliver a better version of the same island.

Autumn: The Sea Holds Its Warmth

September and October are the connoisseur's choice. The land and sea retain summer heat, the crowds thin sharply once the school holidays end, and the light softens; the tourist season runs to 31 October, so most places remain open through September and into October. It is the best autumn equivalent of the late-May window.

By late October the season is closing, some resort businesses shut, and the weather turns more changeable. If you want autumn warmth with a functioning island, aim for September and early October rather than the back end of the month.

Winter: Quiet, Mild and Windy

From November to the end of April most resort businesses close, and flights thin to a handful of direct services, mainly from Madrid, Barcelona, Palma and the UK a couple of times a week. The towns remain lived-in and the walking is excellent, but this is not a beach-holiday month.

Winter weather can be sunny and mild or deliver strong showers and days of strong wind, and nights are cool. The compensation is genuine tranquility, long lunches and empty trails; the cost is that you must plan around limited flights and closed facilities rather than assume they will be there.

What Is Open From April Onwards

From 1 May the resorts open completely, with hotels, restaurants, bars, shops and activities adapting to longer days, and flight and ferry schedules increase. Some hotels and shops stay open all year or reopen for Easter in April, so late April can work if you pick your base carefully and accept a partial island.

Book direct with operators for boat trips and guided walks rather than relying on resort desks in the first weeks of the season. Our guide to things to do in Menorca in May covers what genuinely runs in the opening weeks.

Things to Do That Suit Each Month

April and early May belong to walking and cycling. The Camí de Cavalls coastal path is at its best before the heat arrives, and the honey-stone old towns of Mahón and Ciutadella reward slow wandering. Add a visit to the fish market in Mahón for tapas, and a wine tour at Binifadet for an afternoon out of the wind.

Late May and June suit a mix of coast and culture: cliff viewpoints, the village of Fornells for a long lunch, Es Mercadal for an ensaïmada, and the beaches of the south coast before they fill. June also opens up the longest daylight for a full day out without an early start.

Crowds and Prices Through the Year

Sponsored

Expect the quietest conditions in April and early May, when the island is open in part and prices are at their lowest of the season. Late May and June bring moderate crowds and rising rates as UK half term and early summer holidays approach, and July and August peak on both counts. September is quieter than June and often better value than high summer.

Ask accommodation and tour operators directly for rates and availability for your dates; published prices vary too much by property and season to generalise reliably. The pattern to plan around is straightforward: the earlier or later in the season, the lower the cost and the thinner the crowds.

Menorca or Mallorca, Ibiza and the Mainland?

Choose Menorca over Mallorca and Ibiza if you want quiet, walking, old towns and space over nightlife and resort scale. Menorca is the smallest of the Balearics but has more beaches and coves than its larger neighbours combined, and the pace is famously unhurried. Choose the mainland if you want bigger cities and more varied food and wine within a short drive.

If your dates are fixed and you are weighing alternative islands, our guide to the best time to visit Ibiza sets out how the neighbouring island differs in season and feel.

The Verdict

Book late May to mid June for the best balance of warmth, sunshine, open facilities and manageable crowds; book September for a calmer version of the same. Choose April only if you want walking and old towns and can accept cool evenings and wind, and avoid July and August unless heat and bustle are the point.

Plan Your Visit

Check AEMET's normals for Menorca Airport against your dates before you commit, and treat the figures as typical conditions rather than a forecast. Then match your month to your trip: walking and towns for April, coast and long days for late May and June, calm and warmth for September.
