Spring in Sicily runs from cool, green March to full early-summer heat by late June, and the month you choose decides what kind of trip you get. April averages 18.7°C at Palermo and 21.4°C inland at Catania Sigonella, the wetter of the two springs, while May climbs to 23.3°C and 26.1°C respectively and dries out sharply.

May is the month to book if you want warm days, long walking hours and beaches that are pleasant rather than packed. April suits sightseeing and spring landscapes if you accept rain showers, and June rewards anyone who wants reliable heat and a sea that has finally warmed up. March is for mild days, empty sights and cool evenings.

The island warms up quickly between March and June, but not evenly. Palermo, on the west coast, records an April average high of 18.7°C with 11.4°C nights, rising to 23.3°C and 15.3°C in May and 27.2°C with 19.2°C nights in June, according to the WMO figures supplied by the Italian Air Force.

Inland and on the east side, Catania Sigonella runs hotter and drier: April averages 21.4°C by day and 8.7°C at night, May 26.1°C and 12.3°C, and June 31°C with 16.6°C nights. Those June highs are a genuine early-summer signal, not a gentle spring warmth.

Read the two sets together and a practical rule emerges: April is the month of warm afternoons and cool evenings, May the month when both ends of the day feel comfortable, and June the point at which heat becomes the main planning constraint rather than a bonus.

Weather in March: The Island Wakes Up

March is the transition month, mild enough for city sightseeing and low-level walks but not yet beach weather. Expect green hills, rain showers and evenings that call for a jacket, especially in the interior and at altitude on Etna's lower slopes.

Treat March as a month for Palermo's markets, the Baroque towns of the south-east and the Valley of the Temples near Agrigento, all of which are comfortable to explore without summer heat. If your priority is guaranteed warmth rather than spring greenery, look further south or wait a few weeks, as our guide to where is warm in Europe in April sets out for the rest of the Mediterranean.

Weather in April: Warm Days, the Wettest of the Three

April is warm but unsettled, and the west coast takes the brunt. Palermo averages 18.7°C by day and 11.4°C at night with 8.6 rain days and 65.1 mm across the month, which means you should plan for at least a couple of wet afternoons.

Head inland or east and April looks considerably better: Catania Sigonella averages 21.4°C by day with only 4.8 rain days and 29.9 mm. The nights are still cool there at 8.7°C, so an inland base means warm lunches and chilly evenings.

This is prime sightseeing weather: the Valley of the Temples and the Baroque towns are far more comfortable in April than in June, and the countryside is at its greenest. Plan indoor options such as Palermo's churches and markets for the showery days and keep the coast and ruins for the brighter ones.

Weather in May: The Sweet Spot

May is the month most travellers should aim for. Palermo averages 23.3°C by day and 15.3°C at night with only 4.1 rain days, while Catania Sigonella reaches 26.1°C by day and 12.3°C at night with 2.6 rain days.

That combination is close to ideal for walking, wandering hill towns and eating outside in the evening. It is also the month when the coast starts to feel like a holiday rather than a city break, though the sea lags well behind the air temperature and remains bracing for most swimmers.

The trade-off is that May is no longer a secret. Late-May bank holidays and half term in the UK push up demand on ferries to the Aeolian Islands and on the main coastal resorts, so book transport early if your plan depends on island hopping.

Weather in June: Early Summer Heat

June turns the dial up. Catania Sigonella averages 31°C by day and 16.6°C at night with just 1.4 rain days, and Palermo reaches 27.2°C with 19.2°C nights and 1.9 rain days, so rain becomes a rarity rather than a planning factor.

That heat is welcome on the beach and wearing on the ruins. Sightseeing shifts to early mornings and late afternoons, and the interior, where the inland station figures come from, is hotter than the coast. By late June, Catania Sigonella and Mount Etna's lower slopes are best tackled before midday.

Early vs Late Spring in Sicily

Sponsored

The gap between early April and late May is bigger than the gap between late May and late June. Early April still behaves like a cooler, showery month with crisp evenings, while late April often delivers the first genuinely warm afternoons. Our Sicily in May guide covers how quickly the coast settles into summer.

Late May and early June are the crossover point: the days are long, the rain has largely stopped and the evenings are warm enough to sit outside. If you have flexibility, aim for the second half of May rather than the first half of April.

The East and West Coasts Compared

Sicily is not one climate. The west around Palermo and Trapani is milder and wetter in spring, with April rain days roughly double those inland, which makes it better for city sightseeing and worse for a beach-focused plan.

The east and interior around Catania, Syracuse, Noto and Ragusa are hotter and drier, so April and May there feel a month further into the season. That makes the south-east Baroque towns and the coast around Taormina strong choices for an early-May trip.

Is It Warm Enough for Sightseeing, Walking and Lazing Outdoors?

April and May are the best months of the year for sightseeing on foot: warm enough for ruins and hill towns, cool enough to keep going all afternoon. March works for cities and lower walks but not for sitting on a terrace in the evening without layers.

For lazing outdoors, May is the first reliable month on the coast, and even then the sea stays cold well into the season. June is the month for beach days, but expect to retreat indoors during the hottest hours if you are also sightseeing.

Walking is strongest in April and May, when the interior is green and the heat has not yet built. The Zingaro Reserve on the north-west coast is at its best in spring conditions rather than in summer heat.

What Is Open in Spring

Spring is when Sicily's tourism season opens rather than peaks. Coastal resorts, beach clubs and boat operators tend to run reduced hours in April and scale up through May and June. Because schedules vary by operator, confirm directly with the boat company or lido before you build a day around it.

City sights, markets and the main archaeological sites operate year-round. Ferries to the Aeolian Islands run outside high summer but with thinner timetables in spring, so check the current sailing list before you book rather than assuming a summer frequency.

Things to Do in Spring: Palermo, the Baroque Towns and Etna's Lower Slopes

Palermo is the obvious spring city: street markets piled with artichokes and citrus, chaotic markets and layered architecture that rewards slow walking. Spring is also when the countryside around it turns green and wildflowers appear on the hills.

The south-east Baroque towns of Noto, Ragusa and Syracuse are excellent in April and May, when the limestone is not yet glaring and the evenings are comfortable. Combine them with a day at the Villa Romana del Casale mosaics near Piazza Armerina.

Etna's lower slopes and the Alcantara valley suit spring walking, with the mountain still cool while the coast warms. Higher up, snow can linger into spring, so check conditions with a guide before committing to an ascent.

Crowds and Prices in Spring

Sponsored

Spring is cheaper and quieter than summer, but not uniformly so. Easter week brings a surge in Italian domestic travel, and late-May UK bank holidays and half term push prices up on the coast and on island ferries.

Outside those windows, April and early May are the value months: accommodation is plentiful, restaurants are unhurried and the main sites are manageable. By late June, pricing and crowds move toward the summer pattern.

Spring or Early Summer?

Choose spring, meaning April and May, if you want to walk, sightsee and eat outside without heat management, and if you can tolerate a few showers in April. Choose June if reliable sunshine and warm sea matter more than comfortable walking conditions.

The deciding factor is usually the sea. If swimming is central to the trip, June is the safer bet; if it is not, May gives you the best balance of warmth, light and space.

The Verdict

May is the best month for most spring trips to Sicily: 23°C to 26°C by day on the coasts, mostly dry, and comfortable for walking and sightseeing. April is the pick for green landscapes, quieter sites and lower prices if you accept showers and cool evenings, and June is for heat and swimming rather than long days on foot.

Frequently Asked Questions

How warm is Sicily in spring?

Spring temperatures climb steadily. April averages around 19°C by day in Palermo and 21°C inland near Catania, May reaches roughly 23°C to 26°C, and June brings 27°C to 31°C. Nights stay cool in April and become comfortable from late May.

Is April or May better for a Sicily trip?

May is better for most trips: it is warmer, drier and comfortable for both sightseeing and evenings outdoors. April suits travellers who want greener countryside, thinner crowds and lower prices, and who do not mind rain showers and cool nights.

How hot is Sicily in early April?

Early April sits at the cooler end of the April averages, so expect mild afternoons rather than heat. Daytime highs around 19°C in Palermo and 21°C inland are typical for the month as a whole, with evenings needing a layer.

Is the sea warm enough to swim in Sicily in spring?

Not comfortably in April, and only marginally in May. The sea warms more slowly than the air, so most swimmers find June the first genuinely pleasant month. If swimming is a priority, plan for June rather than spring.

What is high season in Sicily?

The busiest period runs through July and August, with pressure building from late June. In spring, the main spikes are Easter week and the late-May UK bank holidays and half term.

What is spring like in Palermo compared with Catania?

Palermo is milder and wetter in spring, with April averaging 18.7°C by day and 8.6 rain days. Catania Sigonella, inland of Catania, is hotter and drier, averaging 21.4°C in April with under five rain days.

What is the cheapest month to visit Sicily?

Outside the Easter and late-May holiday windows, April and early May are the most affordable spring months, with plenty of accommodation and quieter sites. Prices rise as the season opens through late May and June.
