The best time to visit Lake Como is late May through June, when daytime temperatures settle in the low twenties Celsius and the lake's boats, villas and lakeside restaurants are running properly. September is the stronger choice if you want softer light, thinner crowds and milder walking weather after the summer peak.

April is genuinely pleasant for sightseeing but not for boat lunches on a terrace, and July and August trade comfort for heat, haze and the busiest weeks of the Italian year. The figures below come from long-term climate normals for the Malpensa station, roughly 40 km from Como, so treat lakeside towns as slightly milder than the numbers suggest.

If your dates are fixed rather than flexible, the month-by-month picture still tells you what to plan around: gardens and hill walks in spring, boat time in early summer, and the quieter northern lake in autumn. If you are still weighing the lake against warmer coasts, see Europe's warmest spots in April before committing.

Weather in spring: April and May

Spring normals for the Milano Malpensa station (WMO Climate Normals 1991-2020) put April at an average daily maximum of 17.0 °C (63 °F) and a night-time low of 5.9 °C (43 °F), with 7.64 rain days and 71.76 mm across the month. That is jacket weather: good for walking the lakefront and climbing to viewpoints, less good for sitting outside in the evening.

May shifts decisively, averaging 21.81 °C (71 °F) by day and 10.21 °C (50 °F) at night, though it is the wetter month on paper at 8.14 rain days and 101.63 mm. The rain tends to arrive in showers rather than settled grey days, so a May trip usually mixes bright terrace afternoons with a soaking or two.

Lakeside towns sit lower and closer to the water than Malpensa, so Como, Bellagio and Tremezzina often feel a degree or two softer than the station figures, especially in the evening. Plan spring days around the middle of the day and keep a covered option for late afternoon.

Weather in summer: June, July and August

June is the sweet spot: the same normals give an average daily maximum of 26.64 °C (80 °F) and a low of 14.3 °C (58 °F), with 6.09 rain days and 62.12 mm, making it warm without the oppressive feel of high summer. Days are long, terraces are busy, and evenings still cool enough for a light layer by the water.

July and August push beyond that comfort zone, with heat and haze settling over the lake basin and afternoon storm risk building on the mountains. Midsummer suits early starts, shaded gardens and time on the water, but it is the wrong season for long climbs in the middle of the day.

August carries a second complication: the Italian holiday period fills the lake with domestic visitors, so ferries, car parks and the popular villages are at their most congested. If your dates fall in August, base yourself away from the central lake and travel early.

Weather in autumn: September and October

September is the editor's pick for walking, with the summer heat easing while the lake holds its warmth and the light turns softer. The busy weeks fall away after the first days of the month, and the villages around Bellagio and Varenna feel calmer without becoming empty.

October is the month the season starts closing down again: some boat services thin out, gardens wind towards the end of their year, and restaurants begin shortening their weeks. Days are still mild enough for promenades and hill paths, but the evenings cool quickly and rain spells last longer than in spring.

Early vs late in the season

Late April is a gamble on the terraces: you can get a bright afternoon, but the normals show April days averaging 17 °C, nights close to 6 °C and enough rain days to spoil a planned boat trip. Late May is not a gamble at all, with daytime highs near 22 °C and the lake's infrastructure in full swing.

Early June and late June feel similar in temperature but differ in company, as the first big wave of summer visitors arrives towards the end of the month. Early September and late September differ in the opposite direction: still summery at the start, noticeably quieter and cooler by the end.

What is open

The practical rhythm of the lake follows the season. In April, some lakeside restaurants run reduced weeks, boat services are on a thinner timetable and villa gardens open on limited days; by late May the full summer pattern is generally in place, and it winds down again through October.

Villa Carlotta at Tremezzo and Villa del Balbianello near Lenno are the two gardens most travellers plan around, and both are best in late spring when the planting is at its peak. For opening days and garden hours, the villa operators publish their own calendars, which change by season and by year.

Ferries are the other variable worth building a day around: mid-lake crossings link Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio, and the fast services make a multi-village day realistic from late May onwards. Timetables shift with the season, so pick your crossings for the day you travel rather than weeks ahead.

Gardens and villas in season

Late spring is the garden month. Villa Carlotta's terraces above Tremezzo and the wooded grounds of Villa Melzi at Bellagio are at their most rewarding in May and early June, before the summer heat flattens the planting and the paths fill up.

Villa Balbianello, on its wooded promontory near Lenno, suits a late-May or June visit when the boat landing and garden paths are fully operating and the light on the water is at its best. By late October the same gardens look thinner and the visiting windows narrow, which is why autumn trips should prioritise walking over garden-going.

Walks and viewpoints by month

Spring and autumn beat midsummer for climbing. The lakeside promenades at Varenna and Menaggio are easy year-round, but the hill paths above the villages, including the stretch towards the Greenway del Lago, are far more comfortable in May or September than under July heat.

For the classic long view, the ferry ride to Bellagio and the short climb to its upper terraces gives you the central lake without a full day's effort, and it works in almost any month. Save the higher ridges for a clear, settled day rather than squeezing them into a two-night stop.

Named places by season

In spring, base yourself around Bellagio and Varenna, where the ferries meet and the gardens sit within easy reach. In June, the central lake around Tremezzina and Lenno gives the best balance of boat access and villa visiting, and Isola Comacina makes a worthwhile half-day by boat.

In autumn, the northern lake above Menaggio and the quieter Lecco branch reward travellers who want space and shorter queues. Como town itself works in any season for a first or last night, with the funicular and the lakefront within walking distance of the centre.

Crowds and prices

Easter week brings the first real surge of the year, and the UK May bank holidays and half term push late May and early June close behind. The Italian August holiday is the single busiest stretch, when the central lake villages and ferries are at their most crowded and accommodation is at peak rates.

Prices follow the crowds: peak in August, high through June and early September, and noticeably softer in April and late October. Shoulder-season travel buys you quieter boats and easier restaurant tables rather than deep discounts.

April or May?

Choose April if your priority is walking, quiet villages and lower prices, and you are happy with a jacket and a flexible plan. The month suits sightseeing in Como and Bellagio, but it is not the month for lingering on a terrace after dark. Our guide to Lake Como in april covers this in depth.

Choose May if you want the gardens at their best, boat trips running properly and evenings warm enough to sit outside. The trade-off is more rain days on average and busier bank-holiday weekends, so book your ferry day around the forecast rather than the calendar.

May or June?

May gives you the freshest gardens and the most comfortable walking, with daytime highs near 22 °C and nights still cool. June brings hotter, longer days, with highs around 27 °C, and a livelier lake, but the last week of the month marks the start of the summer rush.

For a first trip, late May to mid June is the most reliable window: warm enough for boat lunches, cool enough for hill paths, and timed before the August peak. Families with school-age children often find early June the easier compromise.

September or October?

Sponsored

September is the better of the two for most travellers, with summer warmth lingering, the lake quieter and the walking comfortable. October suits a slower, sightseeing-led trip, but expect shorter days, fewer boat options and some seasonal closures.

If swimming is your reason for coming, neither month appears in the lake-temperature data, so plan around the facilities your accommodation actually offers in that season.

The verdict

Pick late May to mid June for a first visit: the warmth is dependable, the boats and villas are running, and the crowds have not yet peaked. Choose September if walking and softer light matter more than heat, and treat April as a sightseeing month with a jacket in your bag.

Avoid August unless you actively want heat and company. If your dates are locked to August or to April, adjust the plan rather than the destination: early starts, shaded gardens and time on the water work in both months.

Plan Your Trip

The lake rewards matching your month to your purpose: gardens and village-hopping in late spring, boat days and long evenings in June, hill paths and quieter ferries in September. Arrive via Milan Malpensa, the usual airport for the lake, and check onward transport with the airport or Italian tourism authorities before you book.

Whichever month you choose, build one flexible day into the itinerary for weather and one for a ferry crossing you did not plan. That is how the lake tends to work best.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Lake Como warm in April?

Mildly, not warmly. Long-term normals for the Malpensa station put April days at around 17 °C and nights near 6 °C, which is comfortable for walking and sightseeing in a jacket but too cool for long evenings outside or relaxed boat lunches.

Is June too hot for Lake Como?

No. June averages roughly 26 °C by day and 14 °C at night on the same station record, which is warm without the haze and afternoon storm risk that build in July and August. It is the most balanced summer month for combining boats, gardens and hill paths.

When are the gardens at their best?

Late spring, meaning May into early June, when the planting at the big lakeside villas is at its peak and the paths are still manageable. By high summer the heat flattens the beds, and by late October the visiting windows narrow and the grounds look thinner.

Which airport serves Lake Como?

Milan Malpensa is the usual arrival point for the lake. Confirm onward transport options and ticket arrangements with the airport or the Italian tourism authorities before booking, since connections vary by season and by operator.

Is May or September better?

May wins for gardens and freshness, despite more rain days on average; September wins for walking, softer light and thinner crowds once the first week has passed. Pick May if planting is the draw and September if long hill days matter more.
