Paphos in June: How Warm It Gets and What to Expect

The quick version

Paphos in June averages 28.1°C by day and 18.5°C at night, with barely any rain and over 370 hours of sunshine across the month. Here is what that means.

June is hot, dry and remarkably reliable in Paphos, with an average daily maximum of 28.1°C (82.6°F) and an average night-time low of 18.5°C (65.4°F) at Paphos Airport. The same 1991–2020 normals give 371.8 hours of sunshine across the month and just 1.6 mm of rain. In practice that means long, bright days with almost no washouts, and a trip built around mornings and evenings rather than a midday hike.

That profile suits sightseers who start early, families with school-age children and anyone who wants the sea to have lost its spring chill. It is a poor fit for travellers who wilt in strong sun, want quiet streets or plan long walks in the Akamas. If you are set on spring walking weather, our guide to Paphos in April shows what the resort looks like before the heat arrives.

The figures come from the Cyprus Department of Meteorology station at Paphos Airport, averaged over 1991–2020: a daytime high of 28.1°C (82.6°F), a night-time low of 18.5°C (65.4°F), 371.8 sunshine hours for the month and 1.6 mm of precipitation. Read them as typical conditions rather than a forecast, because individual Junes swing several degrees either way. Our guide to Paphos in May gives the same treatment to the month before, when highs sit several degrees lower.

Larnaca, on the other coast, runs warmer on the same normals: a 30.6°C (87.1°F) average high, a 20.1°C (68.2°F) average low, 378.6 sunshine hours and 2.1 mm of rain. If you want the hotter, slightly more humid version of a Cyprus June, the east coast has the edge; Paphos trades a couple of degrees for the southwest coast's breeze and sunsets.

Sunshine hours are the headline. Nearly 372 hours across the month works out at roughly twelve hours a day, so even a short break usually delivers unbroken blue sky. Rain arrives as a rare, brief event rather than a settled wet spell, and you should not plan around it.

Is June warm enough?

For most visitors, yes, comfortably so. Days in the high twenties are ideal for the coast, al fresco lunches and evenings outdoors, while the mid-teens at night keep dinner comfortable without a jacket. The heat is steady rather than fierce, so June sits on the pleasant side of hot for a Mediterranean beach-and-ruins trip.

It suits couples and families who want guaranteed sun, and anyone planning to combine a few archaeological sites with time by the water. It does not suit travellers who want to walk for hours in the middle of the day or who dislike crowds gathering at the main sights. Those travellers are better off in May, when the same itinerary runs at a gentler temperature.

If you are still weighing destinations rather than committing to Cyprus, compare Paphos with the Greek islands, southern Spain and Malta in our guide to where is warm in Europe in June. For a broader shoulder-season comparison, see where is warm in Europe in April to understand how quickly the Mediterranean warms between the two months.

Early vs late June

The month has a clear gradient. Early June behaves much like late May, with highs closer to the mid-twenties and cooler, more comfortable evenings; by the final week you are into July-like heat, with the mid-thirties possible during a hot spell. Book the first ten days if you want warmth without the full summer intensity.

The heat also changes how you use the day. In early June you can still walk a site at eleven in the morning; by late June the same walk is better done before ten or after six. Build the itinerary around that shift rather than fighting it.

Compared with its neighbours, June is noticeably hotter than May and noticeably milder than July and August, when the interior bakes. It is also the month the season fully opens, so facilities that ran limited hours in spring are generally running normally by the end of the month.

Things to do in June

Start with the Tombs of the Kings and the Kato Pafos Archaeological Park in the first hours after opening. Both are exposed, largely shadeless sites, and by late morning the limestone throws back real heat. The House of Dionysus mosaics sit inside the Kato Paphos Archaeological Site and are one of the few genuinely sheltered highlights.

Agios Neofytos Monastery, a short drive inland from Paphos, makes a good late-morning stop: quieter than the coast, and easy to combine with a slow lunch. Note that the Troodos hill villages sit higher and cooler than the coast in June, so treat a village day as a morning or late-afternoon outing rather than a midday one.

The Akamas Peninsula is the standout for scenery, but it is a poor midday choice in June. Go early, take water and expect the trails to be dry and dusty. Boat trips from the harbour towards the Blue Lagoon and along the coastline are the easier way to see the same cliffs and water without the heat.

The sea and the coast

June is when the Mediterranean finally stops feeling bracing. After months of warming, the water is comfortable for longer swims and for children who want to stay in, which is the main reason families push their trip into this month rather than May. The coast's shelving beaches make for easy, gentle swimming.

Boat operators and waterfront restaurants shift into full-season mode as the month progresses, with more frequent departures and longer hours than in spring. Schedules shift week to week early in the season, so check directly with the boat company or restaurant about the day you plan to sail before you book.

Crowds and prices

Crowds build through the month. UK half-term at the start brings families, then the summer season proper takes over, with the harbour, the archaeological park and the main beaches busiest between late morning and mid-afternoon. Accommodation and flight prices climb accordingly: June sits clearly above May and April but below the July and August peak.

The practical result is that early June still feels like a shoulder month, while the last week feels like high summer. If value matters more than guaranteed heat, late May gives you most of the weather for less money and fewer people.

The honest drawbacks

The sun is the main one. Archaeological sites around Kato Pafos have very little shade, and the combination of high twenties and strong UV makes a midday visit genuinely uncomfortable. Evenings are mild rather than cool, so air conditioning matters more than a jumper.

Occasional hot spells push temperatures well above the average, and the interior runs hotter and quieter than the coast. Facilities close to the resort are fully open by late June. Check the UK government's travel advice page for Cyprus before booking; it is the single authoritative source on entry rules.

None of this is a reason to avoid June, but it is a reason to plan around the heat rather than pretend it is not there. A trip built on early starts, a long siesta and late dinners works far better than one that tries to sightsee straight through the day.

June or May?

May is the connoisseur's choice: warm days, cooler nights, manageable crowds and a sea that is cold for some but fine for most. June wins on reliability, warmer water and the sense that summer has arrived, at the cost of higher prices and busier sights. If you have school-age children, June is the easier month to justify.

Our month-by-month guide to the best time to visit Paphos sets out the trade-offs across spring and early summer so you can match the month to what you actually want from the trip.

Is spring warm enough before June?

If your dates fall before June, the long-term normals show a clear climb rather than a single spring temperature. At Paphos Airport (WMO 17600), the 1991-2020 average daily maximum is 21.8 °C in April, 24.9 °C in May and 28.1 °C in June, while the average daily minimum rises from 11.9 °C in April to 15.2 °C in May and 18.5 °C in June. Sunshine follows the same pattern: 277.9 hours in April, 336.6 hours in May and 371.8 hours in June.

Rain tells a similar story of easing. Monthly precipitation averages 15.2 mm in April, 11.1 mm in May and 1.6 mm in June. The same normals sheet cannot be used for a count of wet days, because its 'days with precipitation >= 1 mm' row is internally implausible, with misaligned columns; for reference, WWIS figures at a >= 0.2 mm threshold give April 5.3, May 2.6 and June 0.5 rain days. Planning around those numbers means treating April and May as months when a shower is possible and June as the month when it is unlikely.

The eastern side of the island runs warmer in the same months. Larnaca Airport (WMO 17609) records average daily maxima of 23.0 °C in April, 27.0 °C in May and 30.6 °C in June, with minima of 12.1 °C, 16.4 °C and 20.1 °C, sunshine of 273.6, 338.4 and 378.6 hours, and precipitation of 15.8 mm, 11.5 mm and 2.1 mm respectively. For a Paphos base, the practical reading is that April days sit near 21.8 °C and May near 24.9 °C, so the warmest beach and coastal hours belong to the later part of spring, and the June figures are the ones to use when deciding how much heat to expect.

The verdict

June is the month Paphos settles into summer: dependable sunshine, negligible rain, warm sea and long evenings. Book it if you want a beach-and-ruins holiday with reliable weather, and plan your sightseeing before eleven and after five.

Choose May instead if you want gentler walking conditions, lower prices and thinner crowds. Either way, treat the published 1991–2020 normals as a description of typical conditions and look at a short-range forecast in the final week before you travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Paphos hot in June?

Yes. The 1991–2020 normals for Paphos Airport give an average daytime high of 28.1°C (82.6°F) and a night-time low of 18.5°C (65.4°F), with 371.8 sunshine hours and 1.6 mm of rain for the month. That is firmly warm rather than extreme, though individual hot spells push well above the average, especially in the last week.

Is June a good time to visit Cyprus?

June is one of the most reliable months for a Cyprus holiday: dry, bright and warm, with the sea finally comfortable for long swims. The trade-offs are strong midday sun at exposed sites, rising prices and crowds as the summer season opens, and mild rather than cool evenings. It suits beach-and-ruins trips and families far better than long midday walks.

Is Paphos busy in June?

Crowds build steadily through the month, starting with UK half-term and continuing as the summer season takes hold. The harbour, the main beaches and the archaeological sites are busiest from late morning to mid-afternoon, so plan those for early or late in the day. Early June still feels noticeably calmer than the final week.

What is the best month to visit Paphos?

It depends on what you want. May gives warm days, cooler nights, thinner crowds and lower prices; June adds warmer sea, more dependable sunshine and a fuller season but busier sights and higher costs. April suits walkers and sightseers who prefer milder temperatures. Match the month to your priorities rather than chasing a single best answer.

Is Paphos or Larnaca warmer in June?

Larnaca is warmer on the same 1991–2020 normals, averaging 30.6°C (87.1°F) by day and 20.1°C (68.2°F) at night, against 28.1°C (82.6°F) and 18.5°C (65.4°F) at Paphos Airport. Larnaca also edges ahead on sunshine hours. Paphos counters with the southwest coast's breeze and sunsets, which make the high twenties feel easier.

Should I visit Paphos in May or June?

Pick May for gentler walking weather, lower prices and quieter sites, accepting that the sea is still cool for some swimmers. Pick June for warmer water, more dependable sunshine and a resort in full summer mode, accepting stronger midday heat and bigger crowds. Families tied to school holidays usually find June the simpler choice.
