Best Time to Visit Cappadocia: Month-by-Month Guide
April to June and September to October give Cappadocia mild days, settled mornings for balloons and manageable crowds. Here is what each month really delivers.
On this page
Late April to early June, and September to mid-October, are the best months to visit Cappadocia. Daytime highs in the MGM Nevşehir normals reach 16.3°C (61.3°F) in April and 21.2°C (70.2°F) in May, with 6.8 to 8.3 hours of sunshine a day — comfortable for walking valleys and climbing to viewpoints, not so warm that midday sightseeing becomes a slog. For the full April picture, read our guide to Cappadocia in April.
The trade-off is that spring is not as dry as it feels in the photographs. The same MGM normals show 11.33 rain days in April and 13.4 in May, so you should expect at least one washed-out afternoon in a week. Autumn has the drier, calmer mornings, which matters most if a balloon flight is the point of the trip.
Weather in Spring (April, May, June)
April is the month the valleys turn green, but it is also the month that most reliably catches visitors out with cold mornings. The MGM Nevşehir normals (1991–2020, station at roughly 1,260 m) give an average daytime high of 16.3°C (61.3°F) and a night-time low of 5.2°C (41.3°F), with 6.8 hours of sunshine a day and 11.33 rain days. That swing is the defining feature of a Cappadocia spring day: you can walk in a T-shirt by early afternoon and want a jacket again by sunset.
May warms up to an average high of 21.2°C (70.2°F) and a low of 9.3°C (48.7°F), with 8.3 hours of sunshine a day. The catch is rain: MGM records 13.4 rain days in May, which makes it one of the wetter months of the year despite its reputation as the ideal spring month. If you are here for valley walking, May is excellent; if you are here for a single balloon morning, budget for a spare.
June is when the season tips towards summer. The normals show an average high of 25.6°C (78.1°F) and a low of 12.3°C (54.1°F), with 10.3 hours of sunshine a day and rain days falling to 8.4. That combination is close to ideal for early starts and long evenings, but by late June the afternoon heat is building and the busiest summer weeks are approaching. Early vs Late Spring
Early April is still a shoulder season in practice. The average low of 5.2°C (41.3°F) means dawn balloon launches and pre-sunrise viewpoint trips are genuinely cold, and the 11.33 rain days mean a wet afternoon is likely rather than possible. The upside is that the valleys are quieter, the light is soft, and you are not competing with the June crowds at the main sites.
Late April and all of May are the better window for valley walking. Rose Valley and Pigeon Valley both become comfortable for a full day on foot, and the wildflowers on the steppe are at their best. If you want the detail on routes and conditions, our guide to Cappadocia in May covers what opens up as the season settles.
The point of difference is what you are optimising for. If a balloon flight is the reason for the trip, late spring is a fair-weather bet rather than a sure one — the wind decision matters more than the rain, and the wetter May record adds risk. If you are walking and photographing, late April through May is hard to beat.
Weather in Autumn (September, October, November)
Autumn is the quietest, driest window in the record. September and October bring mild days in the mid-teens to low twenties Celsius, and the rain frequency falls away sharply from the spring peak — the contrast with May is the single most useful fact for anyone weighing up spring versus autumn. The valleys turn gold, the light softens earlier, and the grape harvest is on around Ürgüp.
The balloon case for autumn is stronger than the walking case, because the mornings are more settled. If flight is the priority, September to mid-October gives you the best odds without the summer heat. November is the month to treat cautiously: it is quieter and cheaper, but the weather is less predictable and the risk of a grounded morning rises.
Weather in Summer (July, August)
Summer is dry, sunny and hot at midday. The MGM June normals show the pattern beginning, and July and August push the afternoon highs higher still, which makes valley walking uncomfortable between late morning and mid-afternoon. The compensation is that the mornings are reliably clear and the balloon season is at its most consistent.
The practical answer for summer is to work around the heat. Start at Göreme Open Air Museum or Uçhisar Castle early, then retreat to an underground city or a shaded cave terrace during the afternoon. Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı stay cool year-round, which makes them the right answer on a hot day and on a wet one.
Weather in Winter (December to March)
Winter brings snow on the fairy chimneys, the fewest crowds and the lowest prices of the year. It also brings the least reliable flying conditions: cold, often sub-zero mornings and a higher chance that a launch is called off. If a balloon flight is non-negotiable, winter is a poor bet on a short trip unless you can stay flexible.
March sits between winter and spring. It is quieter and better value than April or May, but the weather is changeable and the risk of a wet or windy spell is real. For most travellers, early April is a better compromise than March if warmth and daylight matter.

The Balloon Morning
The go/no-go decision is not made by the balloon companies alone. Commercial flights are licensed and supervised by Türkiye's Directorate General of Civil Aviation, which allocates flight slots and takes the safety call on wind and visibility. That is why a clear forecast on your phone tells you almost nothing about whether your 5am flight will actually go — check with your balloon company the evening before.
Wind, not rain, grounds most flights. A pilot controls altitude only, hunting for the layer of air going where they need it, and if the layers do not stack the flight is unsafe. That is why you should book two mornings, not one: put the attempt early in your trip and keep a spare morning, never the morning you fly home.
If your flight is scrubbed, do not go back to bed. The sunrise over Göreme is still worth the alarm, and the Uçhisar viewpoints are at their emptiest when everyone else has gone back to their cave room. For a practical plan around the weather, our guide to things to do in Cappadocia in April is a useful companion.
What Is Open
The Göreme Open Air Museum is the anchor sight and runs through the year. It opens at 08:00 and the earlier you arrive the better: by mid-morning the tour buses are in and the painted churches feel cramped. If you want more detail on what is on in spring, our guide to Cappadocia in spring walks through the season.
The underground cities at Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı are weatherproof and hold a steady cool temperature year-round, which makes them the correct rainy-day answer and the right escape from a hot summer afternoon. Zelve and the Avanos pottery workshops are the smaller sites that fill a fourth day, and they are quieter in shoulder season.
Things to Do Month by Month
In April and May, the walking is the point. Rose and Red Valleys connect on foot from Göreme, Pigeon Valley runs down from Uçhisar, and Ihlara is a half-day west that needs a proper start because of the climb back up. For the April version of this plan, see our guide to Cappadocia in April.
In September and October, the same valleys are at their best for photography: the light is golden by late afternoon, the harvest is on, and the summer crowds have gone. Keep the balloon as a dawn commitment and use the rest of the day for Uçhisar Castle, Zelve and Soğanlı rather than trying to fit too much into a single morning.
If you are still weighing up where to go in spring across the wider region, our guide to warm places in Europe in April sets Cappadocia alongside the warmer, drier options further south.

Crowds and Prices
Mid-June to the end of August is peak season, when hotels, tours and balloon slots sell out and prices peak. Turkish public holidays, especially Bayram, add a domestic surge, and weekends are busier than weekdays throughout the year. If your dates fall in that window, book months ahead.
April to early June and September to mid-October are moderate in both crowds and cost. Winter is the cheapest season, with the lowest hotel rates and fewest visitors, but you pay for it with cold weather and a higher chance of a grounded morning.
April or May? June or September?
For walkers, late April and May are the better spring months: warmer, greener and with longer days. For balloon-first trips, May carries more rain risk than most people expect, so September or early October is the stronger bet. If you have to choose within spring and the flight matters most, pick late April over early April and keep a spare morning.
June and September are the two shoulder months that sit closest to summer. June gives you long days and reliable flying, but the afternoon heat builds and the peak season is closing in. September is drier and calmer, with the harvest and softer light, and it is the better month for a combined walking-and-balloon trip.
How Long to Stay and When to Book
Three nights is the sensible minimum in spring or autumn. That gives you two shots at the balloon, a full morning at the Göreme Open Air Museum with a link to our guide to Goreme Open Air Museum in June conditions, an underground city and a valley walk. Two nights only works if you accept that a single cancellation ends the balloon plan.
Book balloon flights and cave hotels months ahead for June, September and any Turkish public holiday dates. For April and October, a few weeks is usually enough, but if you are fixed on a specific flight operator, get the cancellation and reschedule policy in writing before you pay.
The Verdict
Choose late April to early June for green valleys, mild walking and long evenings, and accept that May is wetter than its reputation suggests. Choose September to mid-October for the best balloon odds, drier mornings and softer light. Avoid late June to August if you dislike midday heat, and treat winter as a quiet, snowy, better-value trip with a real chance of missing the flight.
Whichever month you pick, build the trip around the weather: two mornings for the balloon, early starts for the main sites, and a weatherproof afternoon plan such as Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı. That way a grounded morning costs you a photograph, not the holiday.
